Before hitting the road, take time to determine your mission. This is especially important if you have traveling companions. Some things to determine before leaving are:

• Are you planning a long trip with the intention of returning to your home or will the RV now be your home?

Plan Ahead

Downsize for the RV Lifestyle

If you are planning to make the RV your permanent residence, then you will need to downsize. Sure, you may have sold your home, but take it a step further and minimize your things. Consider a yard sale, asking friends or family to hold on to things, or getting a storage unit. Even the biggest RV can start to feel small when too many things are taking up space.

Get the mail and Pay the bills

Consider setting up a PO Box that someone can check for you. For monthly bills, use automatic bill pay. However, keep in mind that you cannot use a PO Box to register a vehicle, so you will need someone back home who will let you use their address.

Be sure you have extras for those emergencies. Groceries

It might not seem like a big deal, but if you plan on changing campgrounds every few weeks, you may not have the same grocery stores to shop at in every town. Two rules will help with this scenario.

• Learn to be flexible, and how to adjust recipes to work with what you can find.
• When buying groceries always keep in mind how much space is available. But, if possible, try to shop for 2-3 weeks at a time as this will ultimately save time and money.

Be Realistic

Living in an RV might sound like a permanent vacation, but it still has responsibilities. There are bills to pay, groceries to buy, laundry to wash, and if working remotely is part of your RV life, then deadlines, Zoom calls, and other job-related chores. Recognizing time for work and play is important and will help keep emotions in check.
