No matter your level of experience or preferred riding location, there are many ways you can get more from your bike. Whether your goal is to become a stronger rider, be more adventurous, get into the world of racing, or simply get the most from your investment, there are a variety of actions you can take.
Dirt Bike Riding at Its Finest
Position
Unlike riding a motorcycle, when riding a dirt bike, very little time is spent sitting. Rather, you will spend most of your riding time in a standing position. This helps you have better control. However, while standing, endeavor to keep your head over the handlebars, lean forward and keep your elbows away from your torso. You will find this involves a great deal of core muscle! As for your leg position? You will also need to use your knees to grip the gas tank. Then have your feet centered on the foot pegs so you have better control of the levers. All this will lead to a better and faster ride.
Brakes and the Clutch
Be sure that these parts are well-maintained, as they play a key role in your safety. Then, when riding, always keep two fingers near the clutch, so you can quickly shift gears. Oftentimes, you can use the clutch instead of the brakes to slow down. When braking, be careful not to hit it too hard so that your brakes don’t lock and send you airborne! Again, if you want more power, swap out the factory-issued clutch for an upgrade. It won’t improve horsepower, but you will pick up speed faster.
Don’t kill it!
Using the kill switch to turn off your bike doesn’t turn off the battery. Then when you head out for the next ride, your bike battery will be dead. Save the kill switch for emergency scenarios.
Keep your bike properly maintained
There are several key maintenance tasks to ensure prime dirt bike performance.
Keep the chain lubricated with chain lube.
- Check the tire pressure before every ride. For optimum riding, the tires need 15 pounds, or less, of pressure.
- Clean the filter often. Just remove the filter, wash out any debris, give it a light coat of oil, the put it back on the bike. For an easy way to get more power from your dirt bike, upgrade the air filter.
- Change the oil. This needs to be done anywhere between 2,000 and 10,00 miles – as per your riding manual. Clean oil equals more speed.
- Charge it! During cold-weather months where not much riding is done, take the battery on a trickle charger. Failing to do this will mean buying a new battery in the spring.
